Ozzie Avalos - Head Coach
Expert grappling technician with real professional experience.
Ozzie Avalos is the head coach at DT Jiu-Jitsu, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the academy. A product of the prestigious Santa Ana High School wrestling program, Ozzie was the number one ranked 152lb wrestler in California in 2001 and a two-time CIF champion. He was also one of the top wrestlers in the nation, placing 4th at the highly regarded Reno Tournament of Champions.
Ozzie’s competitive journey extends well beyond wrestling—he is a retired MMA fighter with an impressive 7-2 record, with all of his victories coming via submission. This success in both MMA and grappling further highlights his deep understanding of combat sports, which he continues to pass on to his students.
With over 30 years of wrestling experience and 21 years of Jiu-Jitsu practice, Ozzie is a seasoned coach who brings a unique blend of wrestling toughness and Jiu-Jitsu fluidity to his teaching. His dual expertise in these disciplines allows him to offer well-rounded training, helping his students develop the skills needed to excel in both areas.
Ozzie is deeply committed to helping others achieve greater accomplishments, using his guidance and mentorship to help his students unlock their full potential. His passion for teaching, combined with his wealth of experience, makes him a truly valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their skills in wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, or both.

Steve Avalos - Wrestling Specialist
Assistant Wrestling & Jiu-Jitsu Coach
Steve Avalos is an accomplished wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach with a wealth of experience both in competition and coaching. A product of Santa Ana High School, Steve was one of the top wrestlers in the nation in 1999, earning two CIF championships and placing 3rd at the California State Wrestling Championship (CSWC). He also earned All-American honors by placing 3rd at the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions.
After his successful wrestling career, Steve transitioned into professional fighting, where he further honed his skills and knowledge of combat sports. Today, he continues to compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is actively working towards earning his black belt. His deep expertise in both wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu makes him a valuable asset to DT Jiu-Jitsu, where he shares his knowledge and experience with his students.
With his rich background in both wrestling and mixed martial arts, Steve is dedicated to helping his students develop their skills and reach their full potential, both on and off the mat.
